Plastic Tips » Weathering

Did you know?

Plastics are, in general, susceptible to deterioration when exposed to the weather. More specifically, most plastics are subject to photo-chemical degradation induced by the ultraviolet light of solar radiation. This results in addition to its fading in color, embrittlement of the plastic which reduces its physical and chemical properties and lowers its resistance to environmental cracking. Resistance to deterioration is, however, considerably improved by using weather-resistant formulations that include UV stabilizers and weather resistant pigments.

With Respect to UV Stabilizers, did you know?

Carbon, an additive used to colour materials black is inherently UV resistant. Just by choosing black, you are enhancing UV resistance.

UV additives vary in their effectiveness depending on the material and colour. In some cases UV additives will only extend the life of a part for an additional few months. Material selection is very important!

Reds and blues fade the fastest while light colours tend to yellow with age.

Elastomers or soft materials generally don't like the sun.
